As a realtor, I have always recommended moving companies to my clients, so it was an enormous learning experience for me to move 500 miles away. Did you know that some moving companies that use the super long semis combine different homes on the same truck? And they can’t guarantee an exact day of arrival but a window? After interviewing 2 companies that I recommended to my clients in the past, I chose a local San Francisco company, Cummings, that used one truck for our belongings. The company and movers were awesome. Everything arrived in perfect condition. They were polite, pleasant and efficient.
Rightsizing Is the New Downsizing
We chose to pack ourselves as we lived in the same home for 16 years and were resizing into a smaller home. Rightsizing is the positive word to use as it implies empowerment whereas downsizing supposedly has bad connotations as it is associated with loss. Even though it was a lot more work to resize ourselves, it was cathartic to go through all our belongings and decide whether to keep, give away or throw away. Remember the Sex in The City movie when the girls went through Carrie’s closet when she was moving in with Big – it wasn’t as fun but similar concept! Some of the hardest items to part with were my plants – I had a huge ficus and Chinese evergreen that were too big for our new home. I had them for so many years so it was a tough reality that there they wouldn’t fit. And, I found a box of framed photos – a real blast to the past with my big permed hair and funky outfits that I thought were really hot. #throwbackthursday
Hot Air Balloons!
Unpacking was a lot easier as we resized and took control of our stuff! It was real helpful that our 2 year old home has lots of cabinet and closet space to put our things. I have my first walk-in closet where I can see all my clothes, shoes and purses (not as cool as Carrie’s but good enough for me). And, there’s room to dress in it too. My husband is the chef and he set up the kitchen so he can cook with ease and excitement. We are so happy in our new desert home. Outdoor living is a new concept and we love being in our large backyard. We have views of the mountains and see hot air balloons in the early morning and late afternoon. How cool is that?
